Sometimes you already have the numbers from another test or a typed document and just need the words-per-minute maths done for you.
This calculator turns a word or character count, a time and an optional error count into gross WPM, net WPM and accuracy, and it can count pasted text for you.
How to use Calculate WPM
- Enter the words typed, or the characters typed, plus the minutes and seconds taken.
- Add an error count if you have one, or paste your typed text to count words and characters automatically.
- Press Calculate to see gross WPM, net WPM and accuracy, then copy the result.
What you can do with it
- Work out WPM from a known word count and time.
- Convert characters and time into words per minute.
- Get net WPM and accuracy from an error count.
Good to know
This is a calculator, not a live test. A word is five characters, so characters are divided by five when no word count is given. Gross WPM uses all words; net WPM subtracts errors before dividing by time.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate WPM by hand?
Take your correct characters, divide by five to get words, then divide by the minutes taken; this tool does that for you.
What is the difference between gross and net WPM?
Gross WPM uses every word typed; net WPM subtracts your errors first, giving a more realistic working speed.
Can it count my text for me?
Yes. Paste what you typed and it fills in the word and character counts automatically before calculating.
