Character-count scope

Count the Characters in One Word, Including Unicode Details

Measure one word’s letters and characters accurately by isolating its boundaries and checking punctuation, accents and invisible spaces with small examples.

Count the Characters in One Word, Including Unicode Details

To find how many characters are in one word, isolate the exact string and decide whether the count means letters, visible characters or a software storage unit. For an ordinary word such as folder, the answer is six letters and six characters. Accents, punctuation and invisible spaces can make less ordinary examples require a more precise definition.

Select only the string you intend to count

Copy the word into the Character Counter and inspect its boundaries. A double-click selection in another application may include punctuation or surrounding whitespace. A pasted string can also carry a line break at the end.

The tested input folder gives six characters. Folder with a leading and trailing space gives eight including those spaces and six without whitespace. Those are different input strings even though the visible word appears unchanged.

Distinguish letters from punctuation and numbers

The string folder! has seven characters but six letters. Folder2 also has seven characters but six letters because the final digit is not an alphabetic letter. Use the Letter Counter when the requirement specifically concerns letters, and the character total when it includes other symbols.

Apostrophes and hyphens can be part of a written word without becoming alphabetic letters. A one-word result from a word counter therefore does not mean the string contains one character or that every character is a letter. Check the measurement label before reporting a number.

Verify a short ordinary word manually

For folder, enumerate f, o, l, d, e and r. There are six positions. This simple manual check is useful when you are testing a tool or investigating an unexpected result on a short input.

Do not use the visual width of the word as a count. In a proportional font, different letters occupy different widths. A narrow letter and a wide letter each contribute one ordinary letter even though the displayed word lengths can differ substantially.

Understand combined accents

The word café can contain a precomposed accented letter, or an e followed by a combining accent. In the tested modern browser, this site’s counter first applies NFC normalization and reports four character clusters for either form.

A code-point count of the original decomposed form can be five, while the precomposed form has four. That difference concerns representation, not a missing visible letter. If a technical requirement specifies code points or bytes, measure those units explicitly rather than borrowing a visible-character total.

Use symbols to test the counting unit

The input A🙂B produces three character clusters and two letters in the local tool. The emoji is a visible character cluster, while only A and B contribute to the alphabetic-letter count. This is a useful diagnostic even though the full string is not an ordinary English word.

A joined family emoji provides a stronger test: 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 is one grapheme cluster in the tested browser, seven code points and eleven UTF-16 code units. JavaScript’s string length reports the code units, so it should not automatically be described as the number of visible characters.

Keep browser behavior in mind

The local counter uses Intl.Segmenter when available and falls back to counting code points when it is not. That fallback can differ for complex emoji or other joined sequences. MDN documents Intl.Segmenter and its segmentation options.

For a destination with a strict limit, the destination’s definition governs. A username field, a database column and an editorial character limit may use different units. Test the final string in the actual destination when possible.

Report the word and the unit together

State the exact string, its measured count and whether surrounding spaces were included. Recount after adding punctuation, changing an accent or replacing a symbol. For short words, a manual enumeration plus the labeled tool result makes it easier to spot an accidental selection or a mismatch of counting units.
